Doesn’t this motel look quite a bit like the Surf Motel, also in Mackinaw? It’s the same description of the location as well, located on U.S. 23 & 27 in Mackinaw City, Michigan. They must have been close. A later postcard (1970s) from the Vagabond lists Bill and Sue Fuss as the owners. It does not look like the Vagabond Motel is still standing.

Keith Stokes has, as part of his website,, a listing of family names from Memories of Mackinaw, a history of Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Straits. He graciously looked up Sue Fuss, and found that Sue’s photo was included at the end of several pages of photos of the Presidents of Mackinaw City Woman’s Club. No information about the Vagabond, though.

This time of year, I always feel such a pull to go up north. Maybe if you’re not from Michigan, you wouldn’t understand (or maybe you get a pull to go somewhere special in your home state?). Goodness, I miss my grandparents today.
